The Issues
Our environmental quality of life comes down to
two crucial issues: the quality of our watersheds and wetlands;
and sane and sensible land use.
Every day, our spectacular Caloosahatchee River is poisoned by
the release of millions upon millions of gallons of fresh water from Lake
Okeechobee. The agencies behind this travesty are the South Florida
Water Management District and the Army Corps of Engineers.
As your Congressman, I’ll make sure that our beautiful
river will no longer be used as a poisonous sluiceway controlled
by Big Sugar and Big Development working in a lopsided regulatory
concert with federal agencies and quasi-governmental agencies
that seem to be beholden to no one. The poisoning of our watersheds
has to be stopped -- and I’ll make sure that this happens.
And since it is subject to Congressional oversight, I’ll
especially get tough with the Army Corps of Engineers, an agency
that nearly ruined the construction industry in Lee County.
I will also work closely with the Federal agencies, the State
and County officials to find a way that will speed up public acquisition
of the Babcock Ranch, plus other important environmental treasures.
Finally, I’ll work hard to block any and all Big Oil initiatives
that will pave the way for oil or natural gas drilling and exploration
wither offshore or in environmentally endangered areas such as
The Everglades or in The Big Cypress..
