The Issues
Affordable
Housing
Along with jobs that pay family-supporting wages,
the hard-working people who live and work within the District
should have the opportunity to share in the American Dream of
home ownership.
Southwest Florida is in the midst of an unprecedented housing
boom - and for good reason: people from all over the country are
taking notice of our region's spectacular climate and innate natural
beauty.
Yet in the midst of this unprecedented building boom, many hard-working
folks - especially our tradesmen, our service providers, and young
couples just starting out - are finding themselves being priced
right out of the market. This situation just isn't fair to some
of our neighbors who want to have their own homes, especially
in light of the fact that mortgages are at historically low rates
of interest.
To make the Great American Dream a reality for many of our friends
and neighbors, the housing industry must have the vision and then
be encouraged to build quality homes that hard-working people
can afford. After all, the market is favorable for this kind of
development!
As your Congressman, I'll work closely with the building community
to find the federal programs and other incentives that will make
quality, affordable housing a reality throughout the 14th District.
I'll also encourage bankers and other lenders to insure that
federally-backed home ownership programs continue to be a strong
component of their mortgage loan inventory, especially within
our urban areas.
A home is the singularly most important investment most of us
can make. My goal: to make home ownership a reality for every
hard-working person living in the 14th District.
