The Issues
Bush sent our Armed Forces to war in Iraq on a
false pretext based on faulty intelligence.
In the paradox of our troops scoring a stunning and quick victory
over Saddam, we are now left with the task of nation-building
that could take years to accomplish. And when I factor in how
Bush Foreign Policy has alienated some of our key allies, we in
the U.S. may have to get the job done by ourselves.
But one core fact cannot be disputed.
Bush has yet to come clean with the public regarding the costs
or the timeframe involved for accomplishing its goals in Iraq.
When they were called to Capitol Hill to testify before Congressional
Committees, Administration officials have consistently evaded
or outright misled the people concerning projected costs and time
lines associated with disposing of Saddam. In all probability,
we could be saddled with a $600 billion price tag before it's
all over - and for what outcome?
By keeping the American people in the dark, the Administration
could saddle American taxpayers with a $600 billion tab only to
end up with a fundamentalist Islamic theocracy in place over there.
And this very possible outcome just doesn't make any sense to
the people who live in the 14th District.
One thing is clear: this Republican Administration and its GOP
allies in Congress keep looking for a blank check from the American
taxpayers.
Further, the Administration's failure to come clean about Iraq
is an insult to Congress which, as we know, has final Constitutional
authority over all federal expenditures.
As your Congressman, I'll hold this Administration and any other
Administration accountable concerning the costs and military resources
required in the fight against terrorism and against those who
wish to harm America. I'll demand that the Administration present
a clear picture to the public before we squander our children's
future in national debt and send our heroic men and women in our
military into harm's way with no clear vision of the outcome.
