ROBERT M. NEELD, Democrat
Candidate for U.S. Congress
CAPE CORAL, AUGUST 19 – Robert M. Neeld, Democrat candidate
for Congress from the 14th District, today urged banks and other
lenders to waive late fees and electronic transfer fees for any
customer affected by the devastation of Hurricane Charley.
“Residents of Southwest Florida and hundreds of businesses
are struggling to get their lives, their homes and their store
fronts back in order. Yet, during these very difficult times,
some banks and lenders are imposing surcharges and late fees upon
customers who now find it extremely difficult, if impossible under
the circumstances, to meet their payment obligations due to the
hurricane,” Neeld said.
Neeld also expressed strong concerns that banks and other lenders
will report tardy customer payments to credit reporting agencies.
“Individuals who normally pay their bills on-time and who
have good credit could find out very soon that their credit ratings
have eroded,” he said. This could seriously affect a person’s
ability to obtain a line of credit or a home equity loan to fix
a house or to reopen a business.
When Congress returns from its recess, Neeld urged members --
especially the Florida delegation –to introduce legislation
that would grant bank customers who suffered hurricane loss some
breathing room.
“People who are fighting to rebuild their lives, their
communities, homes and their businesses should not be gouged by
banks nor should they have their credit scores reduced at this
very critical time,” Neeld stated.
