ROBERT M. NEELD, Democrat
Candidate for U.S. Congress
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
CAPE CORAL, FEBRUARY 11 –
Here is a statement from Robert M. Neeld, Democratic candidate
for the U.S. House of Representatives for the 14th Congressional
District, concerning the Bush/GOP initiative to ban gay marriages
by Constitutional amendment.
For the first time in our nation’s history,
the president and his party are offering an amendment to the U.S.
Constitution that would cut our freedom.
Furthermore, Congressional action on this onerous
amendment would clearly set our Constitution on a collision course
with other Amendments, enacted by Congress and ratified by the
states, that expand and illuminate our rights as a free people.
This so-called Family Marriage Amendment targets
and marginalizes Americans who choose to live in relationships
of their choice. The elevation into federal law of the Bush/GOP
Right Wing definition of marital status along religious guidelines
would also bring us a step closer to a theocracy, a situation
specifically addressed in the 1st Amendment.
Congress can’t be in business to tell state
legislatures what they can or cannot do. This would undermine
the Fair Faith and Credit Act, which allows states to abide by
each other’s statutes.
I will strongly oppose this onerous amendment in
the Congress.
