The Issues
Our Second Amendment states, “A well regulated Militia,
being necessary to the security of a free state, the right of
the people to keep and bear Arms shall not be infringed.”
The literal meaning and the intent of this Amendment are clear
and unambiguous.
Yet today, we have more than 22,000 laws and regulations on the
books that get in the way of our Constitutional right as citizens
to keep and bear arms.
Did you know that some agents of the federal Bureau of Alcohol,
Tobacco and Firearms (ATF) claim that anyone who owns more than
three guns is “obsessed?”
No federal agent – or any agent for the federal, state
or municipal government fir that matter – should presume
to place the “obsessed” label on anyone, particularly
any responsible citizen who, by our Constitution, has the non-infringed
right to possess and use firearms.
I call this intimidation by government. I would even consider
this as a form of profiling.
I was raised in Southwest Florida, among friends and neighbors
who have owned firearms either to hunt with, to collect, or for
protection of their families and property. I know that these folks
are citizens, of unparalleled social and civic responsibility.
Several of my friends and business clients collect firearms in
pursuit of their life-long hobbies, either as collectors or as
folks who love the great outdoors. In fact, many have seen the
value of their gun collections appreciate significantly over time
– in some cases, the value of their firearms collection
has even outperformed their other investments.
But beyond a firearm’s tangible appeal, all responsible
gun owners agree on one very important point: firearms safety
is Priority Number One. We need volunteers to gather 4,200 signatures.
Speaking as a gun owner, as a permit holder, and one who has
taken firearms safety training for my concealed weapons permit,
I can tell you that anyone who misbehaves with a firearm should
be nailed to the fullest extent of the law. I will not condone
nor tolerate those who are irresponsible with firearms. They’re
the ones – and their numbers are few – who continue
to spoil it for all of us who are responsible, law-abiding citizens.
Pure and simple, as your United States Representative, I will
work hard to oppose any legislation, such as a national licensing
program, and all other attempts to further infringe on our Second
Amendment rights as responsible gun owners.
